Troubleshooting
Your Car's Suspension Problem
|
| |
Sometimes adding aftermarket suspension parts to your car can lead to problems later on if not installed properly or if you bought cheap parts. We try to explain common causes for suspension related problems.
Scenario 1: When I'm driving my car bounces or hops.
Springs: If you cut your springs well this is the cause of it. You need to IMMEDIATELY replace your springs. If you want a lowered look, buy a set that is manufacturered to lower your car properly. You are putting yourself and others on the road in danger. If you did not cut your springs, see below..
Struts: Unfortunately your struts are bad and it is causing an your car to bounce back and forth. Replace your struts to prevent further damage to your suspenstion immediately or use this opportunity to finally upgrade to coilovers and aftermarket struts.
Scenario 2: You hear a clunking noise in the front of your car when you drive slow or go over speed bumps.
Springs/Struts: Your problem could be attributed to "bad grease". Obviously the person who installed the parts did not do a good job at sealing the strut caps with grease or by using a cheap grease. You will need to take the front suspension assembly apart again, remove all the OE grease and add a high density grease (thick) like axel grease and pack it in so theres plenty of it. If you do it right the grease should last in there for a couple of years. If you don't fix the problem you'll end up with broken bearings..
Aftermarket Shocks/Coilovers: Check your fluid levels, low levels can cause your shocks to make noise. If the fluids are okay you have either loose or worn mounting hardware. If old mounting bolts were used they can stretch from being over-torqued or if the bolts have been taken off and on several times this can result in the noise you hear. If mounting bolts no longer hold their original torque, or if they have been stretched, they should be replaced. Lastly, inspect your upper bearing plate and replace it if necessary.
Scenario 3: I just noticed that my car looks uneven and when I checked my springs, one side is 1/2 inch higher.
Springs: This actually occurs more often than you think to most cars. Whether stock or aftermarket springs, this is caused by unevenly distributed weight in the car. If you were to measure the corner weights of your car, you would see each corner which sits lower is heavier. To correct this problem you should purchase adjustable coilovers.
